Hula Voices featuring Kuʻulei Higashi Kanahele

October 4, 2018 | 7 – 8pm

Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Volcano Art Center’s 2018 Hula Voices series will continue on Thursday, October 4 with Kumu Kuʻulei Higashi Kanahele.  Each month, Hula Voices presents an engaging, intimate “talk story” session with Hawai‘i Island’s hula practitioners, as they share their hula genealogy, traditions, protocols and experiences.  These free, educational offerings occur regularly on the first Thursday of each month, from 7-8pm at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Kuʻulei Higashi Kanahele is a PhD candidate in Hawaiian and Indigenous Language and Cultural Revitalization and is an instructor at Hawaiʻi Community College’s Hawaiʻi Life Styles program. Kuulei’s research focus is Papahulihonua, the study of the earth sciences pertaining to the island environment of Hawaiʻi (i.e. geology, hydrology, petrology, oceanography, soil science, and volcanology). She is a hula Pele practitioner with Hālau o Kekuhi since 1997. She has performed at Merrie Monarch and in several hula epics, such as Holo Mai Pele, Hiʻiaka Wahinepōʻaimoku, Hānau Ka Moku, and Kilohi: Nā Akua Wahine.

Please join VAC in celebrating the Hula Arts at Kīlauea.  Hula Voices is supported in part by a grant from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Research and Development and individual funding from members of the Volcano Art Center’s ʻohana.
