Hula Kahiko featuring Kumu hula Sammye Ku‘ualoha Young with Hālau Na Lei Hiwahiwa o Ku‘ualoha
The Volcano Art Center’s 2017 Hula Kahiko series continues on Saturday, December 16 at 10:30am with a presentation by Kumu hula Sammye Ku‘ualoha Young with Hālau Na Lei Hiwahiwa o Ku‘ualoha.
Hālau Na Lei Hiwahiwa ʻo Kuʻualoha was founded in 2008 by Kumu Sammye Kuʻualoha Young, who starting taking hula lessons at age 12, as a student of the late Kumu hula Rae Fonseca, in Hilo. She started her hālau after receiving her ‘uniki, hula’s graduation ceremony, from Fonseca in 2007. Kumu Young’s Hālau performed in the Merrie Monarch competition in 2014.
The performance will take place in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (hula platform) in the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats. National Park entrance fees may apply.
Held in conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performances, the public is invited to join Kumu Hula Kaho‘okele Crabbe and members of Halauolaokalani on the lanai of the Volcano Art Gallery as they share with you “Nā Mea Hula” (all things hula) from 11am – 1pm. Come and learn a hula, use various hula implements and try your hand at lei making. Experience the different aspects that play an integral role in the life of the hula dancer. This cultural demonstration is hands-on and family friendly.
