Alternative Handbuilding with Clay with Erik Wold

Friday Mornings 9am – 12pm

8 week session beginning Friday, January 5, through February 16, 2018 and March 23 for glazing

In this workshop we will be focused on learning an alternative handbuilding method traditional to East Africa. To allow us to freely experiment, a sizeable quantity of clay will be available as we practice the basic technique and then try our hands at forming a completed pot up to 18″ in height. In addition to our main focus, standard handbuilding methods such as pinch, coil and slab will be touched upon. Work to be kept for firing will be weighed and a fee for materials and firing calculated at $2.50 per pound of wet clay. Items not saved will be deconstructed and recycled at no additional cost beyond the initial $15 workshop materials fee.

As larger work will need ample time to thoroughly dry before bisque firing ahead of glazing, a class day for glazing work to be saved will be scheduled for Friday, March 23. Work fired to completion will be available for pick-up between March 30 – April 6.

Cost is $175/$162 for VAC Members plus a $15 materials fee . Additional clay will be available for purchase.
