Thursday Night at the Center: Fishponds Of Hawaiʻi: Free Lecture and slideshow by Carol Araki Wyban
Thursday, May 17th at 7pm
In conjunction with her fine art exhibition currently on display at Volcano Art Center Gallery, Carol Araki Wyban will present a slideshow and lecture on “Fishponds of Hawai‘i” on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 7 – 9pm at Volcano Art Center Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village.
The lecture will include images from her exhibition as well as photos of modern activity at Hawaiian fishponds. The mixed media, fine art exhibition at VAC Gallery presents ancient Hawaiian fishponds as cultural treasures and a form of Hawaiian excellence. Pen and ink drawings, original paintings and illustrations by Wyban share a deep understanding of types of different ponds, technology, legends and fish. Carol will share her inspirations for the exhibit and experiences working with Hawaiian fishponds.

Carol Araki Wyban is the author-illustrator of Tide and Currents: Fishponds of Hawaiʻi published by the University of Hawaiʻi Press. She is the subject of a video produced by Na Maka o ka Āina and has had the unique experience of living at and operating a Hawaiian fishpond as a commercial fish farm.
This evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment. The series is intended to inspire and enhance your appreciation of art and life experience, while fostering community connections.
