Volcano Art Center Gallery is proud to present a collection of original acrylic paintings by David K. Hayes and Daniel VanZyle. The exhibit runs from February 18th to March 26th, 2017 at Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. A special reception with both artists present will be held on Saturday, February 18th from 5-7pm.

The exhibition features Hawaiian flora and fauna within their respective ecosystems. The detailed depictions of rare and endemic wildlife exposes viewers to the treasury of Hawaiian aviary life as well the ecological uniqueness and diversity of the land that supports them. The majority of the artwork on display will feature recent paintings by both artists however a Van Zyle is also displaying a few of his rare graphite drawings as well as his stone lithographs for which he is well known.

About the Artists

David K. Hayes

Born and raised in Hawaii and has lived in the islands his entire life. He graduated in the class of 1978 from Saint Louis High School in Honolulu and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Hawaii in 1985. Dave has been a member of several artist guilds and conservation organizations throughout the years and has been awarded in several juried showings. Over the past three decades he has pursued his interest in cross country backpacking and has explored the more remote regions within the State. Through his experience and research he has become thoroughly familiar with the native and introduced biota of the Hawaiian archipelago.

Daniel Van Zyle

Almost alone in his mastery of the demanding technique of stone lithography. A critic observed that Daniel’s work is united by a keen observation and attention to detail with virtuoso drawing skills that create a pure and precise vision of the beauty and vulnerability of Hawaii’s wildlife.” Considered one of Wildlife Arts’ prominent original print artists, Van Zyle’s stone lithographs and etchings derive their special magic from the dramatic interplay of masterful delineation and romantic idealism. Working with master printers in Washington, Alaska, New Mexico, Hawaii and California, Van Zyle embraces the art of old world by coaxing memorable impressions out of both metal and stone. Dan Van Zyle and his works have been the subject of articles both in national art and wildlife art publication. His numerous distinctions include being named Hawaii’s Audubon Society Artist 1989-90 and Hawai’i Ducks Unlimited Artists 1992 & 1994. His works are part of the permanent collections of Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the Honolulu Museum. Included in his public and private commissions are the 1997-98 Hawai’i State Conservation Stamp and illustration of the award winning children’s book Flight of the Golden Plover. Daniel resides in Honolulu.
