Alternative Handbuilding – East African Pottery with Erik Wold
Saturday Mornings: 10am – 1pm
The Alternative Handbuilding – East African Pottery workshop series will focus on “direct pull” handbuilding techniques common throughout East Africa and neighboring regions. In 2017, Volcano Art Center in partnership with Hawai‘i Craftsmen was privileged to host a master class series instructed by world-renowned artist Magdalene Odundo. Instructor Erik Wold became enthralled with this alluring technique after participating in the Odundo workshop as a lab tech. After much practice, he is sharing what he learned in this new pottery series.
The series will start with a documentary showing and short videos followed by getting participants’ hands directly in clay. The focus will be on gaining control of this method creating small to medium sized work, culminating in a barrel firing fueled by woodchips. This primal yet nuanced technique is a great introduction to working with clay for those with no previous experience as well as an exciting opportunity for those with experience to learn something entirely new.
Alternative Handbuilding – East African Pottery is an eight-week workshop beginning Saturday, July 6, 2019, through Saturday, August 31, 2019 with no class on August 24, from 10am – 1pm. Cost is $200/$180 for VAC Members plus a $15 materials fee for 6 lbs of clay, which includes glazes and firing for that material. Additional clay will be available for purchase.
Open studio time will be available to registered students on Wednesdays from 2 – 5pm. Cost is $10 per day, with tickets available at the Administration Office front desk during business hours. Must be registered for a ceramics class to participate.
Erik Wold studied Art, specializing in Ceramics, at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, graduating in 1993. Erik’s primary focus has been creating functional high-fired pottery. Key areas of interest have been in the pottery traditions of Japan and most recently, East African handbuilding methods.
