Experimental Catalyst Abstract Watercolors
\nImagine glass being shattered. The random shapes and patterns are totally unpredi ctable. Now take these haphazard glass pieces and marry them with watercol ors\; then add your own playful attitude. This is Experimental Watercolors ! Like music on paper\, colors flow in delicate waves.
\nEach studen t will create three to five separate 8×8 inch watercolor paintings on cold press watercolor paper using pre-broken glass as a catalyst to spark crea tivity. Students will also be taught theories of good composition\, along with color theory and color wheel use. Abstract qualities are the focus in this workshop using three – four paints right out of the tube with the gl ass. After the first drying and glass removal\, each piece is brought to f urther expressiveness by using detailed watercolor techniques of washes\, spatters\, lifting\, value gradations\, dry brush and more.
\nJoin B ig Island artist\, Patti Pease Johnson for the Experimental Watercolor s workshop on Saturday\, April 10\, 2021\, from 9am – 12:30pm at Volc ano Art Center. Cost for the workshop is $50 and $45 for VAC Members plus a $15 fee\, inclusive of supplies. Beginner and intermediate artists are w elcome.
\nWhen asked to describe the experience Patti explained\, “Y ou can’t help but wonder what is going to happen after your first piece of glass is put on watercolor paper. In painting\, the more chances you take \, the more you will stretch the limits of your understanding\, and in tur n the more you will grow as an artist.”
\nPatti Pease Johnson’s artw ork can be found at galleries and shops across the State and in collection s around the world.

Dalani Tanahy will be at the V olcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park from 2-5p m on Friday\, April 16th.
\nDalani Tanahy is a native of San Diego C alifornia with roots in Maui and Oʻahu. Her maternal grandparents are Edw ard Bailey and Emily Kane of Wailuku\, Maui. Her paternal grandparents ar e Emily and Arthur Enos of Laʻie\, Oʻahu. She grew up spending her summer s in Laʻie and knew she would return to live in Hawaiʻi one day. As a chi ld\, she enjoyed the slow tedious work involved in crocheting\, knitting\, embroidering and quilting. Dalani made her first i`e kuku and hohoa beat ers over sixteen years ago through the help of Kawai Aona-Ueoka. Her firs t experience teaching kapa started at the Cultural Learning Center at Kaʻa la in Waiʻanae. She found the perfect marriage of art and education throu gh creating and sharing the art of kapa and was inspired to start Kapa Haw aii. Kapa Hawaii teaches people about the types of Polynesian bark cloth collectively known as ‘tapa’ with a special emphasis on the tapa or ‘kapa’ made in the Hawaiian Islands.
\n“As a life-long artist\, I am attra cted to the many disciplines involved with kapa such as: tool making\, hor ticulture\, graphic design\, natural dye production\, education\, research \, and the meditative rhythms of the beating itself. Through crafting my own tools\, I was able to work with precious and wonderful natural element s such as smooth warm woods\, hand-picked basalt pohaku\, and opihi shells .” Delani states “I became a scientist in the kitchen laboratory boiling u p the bark\, petals\, leaves\, and roots that would become the brilliant b lues\, greens\, yellows\, and an unbelievable rainbow of colors that our k upuna loved to place on their kapa.” For those intrested in meeting Delani and viewing her Kapa works she will be at the Volcano Art Center Gallery from 2-5pm on Friday\, April 16th. Delani will also be instructing an Art s Of Hawaiian Kapa Workshop on April 17th at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volc ano Village. The class will introduce participants to the activities invol ved in making a piece of kapa including stripping and beating a piece of w auke bark using traditional tools and learning about Hawaiian design and h ow it changed over time while printing your own canvas tote.

EXHIBIT: Na Makana : an exhibition of digital and ceramic art by Nelson and Kainoa Makua
\nThe Volcano Art Center is proud to present Nā Makana\, a mixe d media exhibition featuring the artwork of Nelson and Kainoa Makua from M ay 22 – June 27\, 2021. This father and son duo may be best recognized as the brand Nā Makua Original Hawaiian Designs\, a casual clothing line they established in 1999. However\, this exhibition highlights the fine artwor k created by this talented family. Nelson will be displaying digital paint ings while Kainoa will exhibit ceramic work. Both artists incorporating co ntemporary graphic design with traditional Hawaiian motif in their art wor k. The exhibition will be on display daily from 9am – 5pm at the Volcano A rt Center Gallery in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park under social distanci ng and mask wearing protocol. While admission is free\, park entrance fees apply. The exhibit can also be viewed virtually at volcanoartcenter.org.
\nNelson Makua has been an artist and designer on the Big Island for over 40 years. Born and raised in Kailua\, Oahu\, he and his ‘ohana moved to the Big Island in 19 75\, where they reside in Puna\, the original home of the Makua ohana. “My ancestors were part of the migration from Tahiti to Hawaiʻi who settled i n Kalapana in the district of Puna. For me\, moving to the Big Island was like coming home.”
\nNelson is well known as a graphic designer thro ughout Hawai‘i\, Japan and the US mainland. He is a two time Na Hoku Hanoh ano award winner for graphic design. He is the only artist to have created 8 years of Merrie Monarch Festival posters with his limited edition “Pele ” series. His first 2003 poster is now a collectors item and his 2008 Merr ie Monarch poster received the prestigious Pele Award for best illustratio n by the Hawaiʻi Advertising Federation. In 2016\, Nelson was honored as a MAMo Awardee in recognition of his artistic contribution as a Native Hawa iian artist.
\nNelson began his artistic journey honing his skills i n drawing\, painting and photography using traditional methods. Then 30 ye ars ago he discovered the digital world which is how he now exclusively cr eates his art. “The digital age has opened up a whole new world of creatin g for the artist\, with endless possibilities.” Blending his artistic skil ls of traditional and digital allows Nelson to explore new ways to interpr et his art. Nelson does not concern himself with a “style” to his art but loves exploring many different styles that best interprets his vision for that individual piece. “Guided by my küpuna before me and influenced by my own life experiences\, I view myself as a Hawaiian artist who is living i n my own time\, creating images that reflect that time and place.”
\nKainoa Makua grew up in the Puna district of the Island of Hawai‘ i. He is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and earned his B.A. in fine arts from UH-Hilo. It was while he was at Kamehameha Schools\, after exploring various art mediums\, that he discovered his passion for ceramics. This c ontinued throughout his college years at UH- Hilo under the guidance of Pr ofessor Gordon Lee.
\nIt is in the medium of the ‘aina that he is ab le to express himself. His pieces can be functional as a platter or a pot\ , but they are uniquely his and express a Hawaiian point of view. Kainoa’s ceramic pieces have been featured at the Bishop Museum\, Viewpoints Galle ry on Maui and in art exhibitions throughout the state. Kainoa’s clay crea tions reflect the duality of the modern Hawaiian artist and traditional va lues of kanaka maoli.
\nKainoa grew up working with his father in hi s graphic design business. This prepared him well for his role as a design er and co-owner of Nā Mākua Original Hawaiian
\nDesigns which focuse s on their Hawaiian heritage. Nelson shares that “Nā Mākua gives us anothe r artistic medium and a visual voice to express our cultural views as nati ve Hawaiians through our images.” Their designs are bold\, personal and ve ry distinctive. “Our images often create strong emotional feelings in Hawa iians and we are often told how proud our designs make them feel\,” states Kainoa. Together Nelson and Kainoa also produce various Big Island events such as the annual MANA Invitational Art Show\, The Merrie Monarch Invita tional Hawaiian Arts Fair and the Nā Makua Christmas Gift fair.
